iSCSI Target
iSCSI is a type of storage area networking (SAN) service that provides access to consolidated, block level data storage. It facilitates data transfers over intranets and storage management over long distances. By mapping iSCSI LUNs to iSCSI Targets, client servers can access storage spaces by its iSCSI initiator as if they were local disks. Depending on the model, Synology NAS supports creating multiple iSCSI Targets on which iSCSI LUNs can be mapped.
To create an iSCSI Target:
- Click the Create button.
- Enter the iSCSI Target's information, including Name, IQN, and whether to enable CHAP authentication.
- Select the desired iSCSI LUN mapping from the drop-down menu.
- Click OK to create a new iSCSI Target.
Term Explanation
- IQN: IQN (iSCSI Qualified Name) is a set of unique names for an iSCSI Target. IQNs must not conflict with the IQNs of iSCSI Targets on other servers. In addition, IQNs must be less than 128 characters and may include letters (case insensitive), numbers, colons, dashes, and dots. The suggested naming format is iqn.[date].[domain]:[device identifier], for example: iqn.2000-04.com.synology:storage.diskarray.1.
- CHAP authentication: Selecting CHAP allows the server to verify the client's identity. User names may contain 1-12 letters and numbers, and passwords may contain 12-16 letters and numbers.
- Mutual CHAP authentication: Enabling Mutual CHAP allows both the client and the server to authenticate each other. Any CHAP password used for client authentication must not be used for any server authentication, and vice versa.
To remove an iSCSI Target:
Note: When removing an iSCSI LUN, all data on the iSCSI LUN will be deleted.
- Select the iSCSI Target you want to remove.
- Click Remove button and follow the wizard to complete the process.
To edit an iSCSI Target:
- Select the iSCSI Target you want to edit.
- Click Edit.
- After editing settings, click OK to save the changes.
Term Explanation
- CRC Checksum: Enable CRC Checksum to check for errors during data transmission.
- Multiple Sessions: Allows multiple sessions from one or more initiators to connect to the same iSCSI Target at the same time. To protect your files from corruption or unexpected data loss, it is strongly recommended that you use a shared file system or cluster system such as VMware Virtual Machine File System (VMFS) or Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS).
- Masking: Masking allows an iSCSI Target to be exclusively accessed by a specified iSCSI initiator IQNs.
To enable or disable an iSCSI Target:
- Select the iSCSI Target you want to enable or disable.
- Click Enable or Disable.
To register iSCSI Targets with an iSNS server
iSNS (Internet Storage Name Service) provides centralized management service for iSCSI. To register iSCSI Targets with iSNS service, follow the instructions below.
- Click the button iSNS and tick the box Enable iSNS.
- Enter IP address of the iSNS server. Click OK to apply the setting.
